Overview of Dark Circles
Dark circles, or puffy eyes, occur when a person is very tired or overworking himself or herself. The blood vessels dilate when a person does not get enough sleep, which is why they are seen more clearly and show up as dark circles. They can also appear as a result of genetics. In that case, prominent dark circles are seen when the blood vessels underneath the thin skin below the eyes rupture.
Another cause of dark circles can also be linked to a malfunction of the liver. When the liver is faced with too many toxins, dark circles may start appearing under the eyes. The toxins that negatively affect the liver in this way include the following:
- Foods high in sugar
- Processed foods that are high in low-density lipoproteins (or “bad” cholesterol)
- Alcohol
Adjusting one’s diet is a good start to solving the problem, but dark circles may still take a long time to disappear on their own.
