Overview of Dark Circles

Dark circles, or puffy eyes, occur when a person is very tired or overworking himself or herself. The blood vessels dilate when a person does not get enough sleep, which is why they are seen more clearly and show up as dark circles. They can also appear as a result of genetics. In that case, prominent dark circles are seen when the blood vessels underneath the thin skin below the eyes rupture.

Another cause of dark circles can also be linked to a malfunction of the liver. When the liver is faced with too many toxins, dark circles may start appearing under the eyes. The toxins that negatively affect the liver in this way include the following:

  • Foods high in sugar
  • Processed foods that are high in low-density lipoproteins (or “bad” cholesterol)
  • Alcohol

Adjusting one’s diet is a good start to solving the problem, but dark circles may still take a long time to disappear on their own.

Treatment Options at Our Montgomery County, Philadelphia Location

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is one of the treatments often offered to combat dark circles. IPL is a common procedure, which is often used for treating discolorations and conditions such as the following:

  • Removing sun spots or age spots
  • Improving the overall texture of the skin
  • Lightening the appearance of dilated and broken blood vessels

The IPL procedure involves sending strong light pulses directly into the affected area. These light pulses are able to restore the damaged skin, with minimal discomfort to the patient. The treatment usually lasts between 15-45 minutes on average. Dr. Weishar will discuss the exact type of IPL treatment the patient will receive after the initial consultation.
