In this treatment, bothersome or undesired leg veins are injected with a solution that causes them to break down and disappear. Both spider veins and varicose veins can be injected to minimize or eliminate the vessel. These veins are primarily located in the legs and can be the result of genetics, occupations that require prolonged standing, obesity, or other causes. Patients typically find the treatment comfortable, and it is often completed within 30 minutes.
Sclerotherapy is the treatment of veins by injecting them with substances that cause the cells lining the vein to stick together, causing the body to reabsorb the vein. It is a safe and successful procedure in many patients. Sclerotherapy improves the appearance of tiny veins and can treat larger veins that may cause pain and inflammation. Many lasers are being developed for the treatment of leg veins, however they have yet to be proven superior to Sclerotherapy. Dr. Weishar uses many lasers in her practice and will offer laser treatment of veins when it has proven advantageous over the current methods.
Ambulatory Sclerotherapy is a common and effective treatment for spider veins. The procedure is done by using a thin needle to inject a sclerosing solution into the veins. The solution then irritates the lining of the vessels, leading them to swell and stick together, causing the blood to clot. After a few weeks, the vessels turn to scar tissue and gradually disappear.
Foam Sclerotherapy is an advanced technique used to treat large and bulging varicose veins. By mixing a combination of a standard sclerosant with either air or carbon, the foam is created and injected into the veins to treat the affected area.
