What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing persistent redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and sometimes bumps or pimples. While the exact cause is still unknown, this condition can be triggered by various factors, including sun exposure, stress, and certain foods. If you are experiencing symptoms of rosacea in Philadelphia, understanding your condition is the first step toward effective management. Many people struggle with the unpredictable flare-ups of rosacea, but our expert team can help you regain control and achieve clearer, calmer skin.

Rosacea Signs And Symptoms

This skin condition has a wide variety of symptoms and is divided into four subtypes. These subtypes help in the identification of the best treatment options. Some patients also present with more than one subtype. Symptoms of rosacea include:

Facial redness, flushing, and visible facial veins

In these patients, the face is flushed with visible spider veins. The facial skin may be sensitive, rough to the touch, and swollen.

Acne-like breakouts

The signs and symptoms are the same as subtype 1, but also include an acne-like breakout in the areas where the skin is red, and the skin appears to be oily.

Thickening skin

Is rare, the skin appears to be thicker in the areas affected, such as the nose, cheeks, chin, ears, and forehead. The skin is also oily and the pores appear larger.

In the eyes

This subtype affects the eyes and can cause blurry vision. The symptoms include very dry, itchy eyes that appear watery or bloodshot. Some patients also present with visibly broken blood vessels on their lids.

What Causes Rosacea

The exact cause of rosacea remains unknown. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association scientists believe the following factors contribute to the skin condition.

Genetics:

Many people who suffer from it have other family members who have it too.

Overactive immune system:

People who react to the bacterium, bacillus oleronius, often have acne rosacea.

H pylori bug:

Many people with rosacea have this infection in common.

Cathelicidin:

This protein protects the skin from infection and can cause swelling and redness.

Can Certain Factors Trigger Rosacea?

Certain lifestyle choices and environmental factors can also worsen the symptoms of rosacea. These may include eating spicy food and drinking red wine, hot tea and coffee. According to the Mayo Clinic, the risk of rosacea increases if you are between the ages of 30 and 50, have fair skin, are female, smoke or have a family history of the skin condition.

Dr. Weishar’s Treatment Options In Bucks County

While there is no cure for rosacea, our doctors offer long-term treatment plans that require no downtime. Proper treatment results in a clearer complexion, an improvement in the appearance of fine lines, scars, blemishes, blood vessels, and sun damage, as well as the skin’s overall tone and texture. We typically offer the following treatments to help alleviate the signs and symptoms of rosacea:

  • DiamondGlow™
This gentle microdermabrasion exfoliates and refreshes the skin, leaving it feeling softer and smoother. The treatment takes 30-60 minutes to complete and a minimum of 3 sessions may be needed for visible skin improvements.
  • Intense Pulse Light (IPL)
IPL laser treatment uses light therapy to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and reduces the appearance of spider veins and redness on the face. A number of treatment sessions may be needed, with each session lasting between 15-45 minutes, depending on the treatment area.
  • Laser Genesis
  • A noninvasive 1064-nm laser that delivers micro-pulses of heat to the dermis, helping calm diffuse redness and shrink tiny surface vessels that contribute to rosacea. It also smooths texture and softens fine lines with no downtime. A series of 4-6 sessions is common to maintain the results.
    Accutane
This oral medication, also known as isotretinoin, helps with reducing inflammation and redness. The dosage depends on the severity of the skin condition.
