Overview of Fractional Skin Resurfacing at Springhouse Dermatology & Aesthetics

Fractional skin resurfacing is an ablative laser treatment that uses CO2 (carbon dioxide) or Erbium. Whereas CO2 laser treatments are used for deep wrinkles and scars, Erbium is used for finer lines and wrinkles, along with superficial skin concerns. Both of these lasers remove layers of the skin.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments can be done on all skin tones, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgeons (ABCS). The key to success is working with an experienced dermatologist who knows which types of lasers work best for a specific skin tone.

Candidates for CO2 Fractional Skin Resurfacing

As this procedure removes wrinkles and scars on the skin, fractional skin resurfacing is often done on patients that have one or more of these skin concerns:

  • Age spots
  • Scars
  • Acne scars

FAQ

How often do you need skin resurfacing?

This depends on the seriousness of your skin issue; the more dramatic improvements you need, the more treatments you’ll need to have. It takes around four weeks for your skin to recover, so one visit per month is usually the most you can expect to be treated. Treatments this frequent should only be done for patients with particularly bad scars.

Is laser skin resurfacing permanent?

Laser skin resurfacing is not permanent but can achieve noticeable results. It helps to remove damaged skin on the surface and goes deeper into the skin to stimulate new skin growth.

Is CO2 laser skin resurfacing painful?

Laser skin treatments won’t necessarily hurt and it largely depends on your tolerance to pain. Most dermatologists compare this to a rubber band snapping on the skin. The pain is usually very mild and depends on the laser used, and the experience of your dermatologist.
