Fat Injections With Our Board-Certified Dermatologists

Aging, genetics, and gravity commonly lead to decreased facial volume over time. Fat transfer, also known as microlipoinjection, uses a patient’s own purified fat to restore volume and soften contours of the face, hands, and neck.  The popular treatment fills in hollows around the nose, rejuvenates marionette lines, and enhances volume so that youth is restored. Depending on the extent of volume-loss and area of focus, patients may benefit from one or several microlipoinjection sessions.

Common Concerns Treated with Fat Transfer

Facial fat transfers improve the facial structure and enhance the appearance of tired, saggy skin. We can safely add fat to correct common signs of aging such as:

  • Hollow cheeks
  • Depressions beneath the eyes
  • Crows feet
  • Dynamic lines and wrinkles
  • Worry and smile lines

Fat Injections vs. Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers and fat injection provide similar benefits, but there is one major difference that should be considered before deciding on a treatment option. Patients who undergo fat transfer (autologous fat injection)
have a lower chance of side effects and allergic reactions because microlipoinjection re-introduces a natural substance into the body.

While dermal fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm feature natural hyaluronic acid, they dissolve quickly over just a few months, requiring multiple treatments for long-lasting results. Fat injection offers plumper features for up to 2 years following treatment. Fat transfers can be combined with other treatments and transform your face with little recovery time.

Recovery after Fat Injections

After fat graft surgery patients may experience bruising, irritation, and swelling at the injection area. This discomfort is normal and will subside within a few days. For optimal comfort, we recommend patients take Tylenol to offset symptoms. If you experience complications such as dizziness, fever, or chest pain following your fat injections, call us immediately.

Post-operative Instructions

Following a fat transfer procedure, we recommend patients follow these guidelines for optimal recovery.

Post-Treatment Instructions

Following a fat transfer procedure, we recommend patients follow these guidelines to ensure the best results:

Advantages and Disadvantages

Microlipoinjection features many benefits. In addition to being a viable alternative to a face-lift, the procedure subtly corrects volume-loss related to aging. Since natural material is used, side effects tend to be minimal and rare and last longer than other injectables. Facial sculpting is also an option to fill out deep hollows, acne scarring, and pitted skin. Unlike other treatments, fat transfers can be administered in large volumes to assess greater skin damage.

As with any procedure, there is a slight chance of redness and swelling which subsides within a few days of the procedure. Other possible complications include irregularly contoured features, skin necrosis, and uneven results from liposuction. This is why your procedure should only be performed by a professional and passionate skin-care expert such as Dr. Margo Weishar and Dr.. Ashley Clark.
